Yesterday Barb and I birded part of the Grand Coulee going as far as
Steamboat Rock. Much of the water was still locked in ice, but we managed a
few nice bird nonetheless.
Pioneer Memorial Gardens offered great views of a Northern Saw-Whet Owl.
This was a life bird for Barb and she was thrilled.
Soap Lake's East Beach offered 4 Least Sandpipers along the thawed
shoreline. Among the usual suspects on the lake were Ruddy Duck, Eared
Grebe, Bufflehead, and Common and Barrow's Goldeneye.
The south end of Lake Lenore had many American Wigeon and a single drake
Eurasian Wigeon. Also present were most of the common duck species and a
single Trumpeter Swan. At mid-lake two more Trumpeter Swans were found.
A quick perusal of perennial Sage Sparrow hang-outs produced no Sage
Sparrows, but the snow was still fairly prevalent and it may be a week or so
before they arrive.
A beautiful dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk was courting an intermediate-morph
in Dry Coulee and offered great views as they soared together.

Cheers
