Subject: [Tweeters] Kent Short-eared Owls

Hi Tweeters,

Last night at dusk I was back at the fields of Kent
Ponds off of Russell Road. There were at least 3 and
maybe 4 Short-eared Owls. I heard a different
vocalization. I originally thought it came from two
owls that were soaring together overhead but I was
surprised to see it was a perched owl quite close to
me. I was inside the gate and the owl was probably
less than 100 feet away perched on one of the short
pine trees. It was observing the soaring birds. (I
love to watch birds watch birds...) The Birds of North
America BNA online describe two winter calls and I am
fairly certain last night I heard the bark call. The
call was not as lengthy as the call recording on BNA.
I tried to get a photo of this close by bird but
something about the camera scared it off. For an owl
that is supposed to be pretty quiet most of the time
the birds at Kent are talkative.
