Hi All,
I hiked the loop trail at Discovery Park today, starting and ending at the
South Parking Lot. Highlights of the trip included a very close encounter
with a male Anna's Hummingbird in a bush next to the water treatment plant
and group of Barrow's Goldeneyes that waddled out of the sound just below my
position to drink some freshwater from a stream. Photos of both encounters
can be found in the "New Photos" gallery here:
http://www.goatislandimages.com/photogalleries.htm The Goldeneyes were very
awkward on land, and you'll notice in a few of the photos that they
preferred to plop themselves down in the stream to drink rather than doing
it from a standing position. Another interesting find was a dozen or so owl
pellets in a small stand of fir trees near the Navy housing. There was
quite a bit of whitewash on a few of the trees, and the pellets were very
large. One of them contained a skull that was large enough to have belonged
to an adult Norway Rat. I'm guessing a Barred or Great Horned Owl had been
using the area.either that or an extremely feisty screech owl :o). The
complete list from the trip is below, organized in the order they were
sighted.
