Greetings All

Gary brings up the interesting subject of Glaucous Gull size. The race that
breeds in Alaska, barrovianus, averages darker (as adults) and smaller than
other Glaucous Gulls "especially in bill" per Howell and Dunn's excellent gull
book. Many of our westside Glaucous Gulls are of this race, but I am not sure
the exact percentages. Most of our Glaucous Gulls are immatures, and since they
are so easy to ID, we (me included) don't often actually scrutinize the bird's
size. Since doing so, I've been surprised how small some of these birds are.
