I am fascinated to hear about these additional sightings. And in fact it is
probably no less likely for this species to be established in WA than it is
for the Eurasian Wigeon. Even so, both of the Washington bird lists I
found on the web include the Eurasian Wigeon, but not the Mandarin Duck. I
wonder why not, and who actually decides whether or not a species is
established or not.

there was also a mandarin male for quite some time around the holidays on
pine lake, sammamish, not too far north of auburn (as the mandarin flies)...

he wasn't counted on the CBC (wasn't seen; i was on that team), but was
photographed by myself and the landowner not a week or two before that...

On June 21 of 2005, I observed a female Mandarin Duck with 6 very young
ducklings on the Green River in Auburn. I had 3 additional sightings in
June and July of that year of a female with a single duckling in the same
area.



I can't say that there is an established population of Mandarin Ducks in
southwest King County, but I CAN say that they have reproduced.



Also that year friends in Kent had several madarins (males and females)
visiting their yard beneath their bird feeders.



A female mandarin can easily be mistaken for a Wood Duck. Who knows how
many Mandarin Ducks are in SW King County?

The male mandarin duck was present in the same place today at 3:30 PM. This
is an impossibly beautiful duck, even surpassing the wood ducks and
harlequins which I thought were at the pinnacle of duck showiness.
In view of the distance from home waters, he's obviously an escapee from
someone's duck pond collection. I would expect the caretaker to be eager to
recover him.

Today we saw a beautiful male Mandarin Duck in Federal Way hanging
around with a couple of Mallards. He was there yesterday, also. He
is in a small catch basin pond at the south end of Celebration Park at
the intersection of 9th Ave. So. and So. 333rd. St. He is absolutely
gorgeous. Wonder if he will be there for very long!
