Subject: [Tweeters] Pigeon Guillemot Nest Help Needed

While I am sure that Tweeters can provide valuable information about these
nest boxes, I am not sure these birds can wait for the results of the
discussion. Is it possible to find out who is responsible for the hillside
and ask them if they can cut the plastic away from the area of the nest
holes and avoid the questionable boxes? That would seem to allow the birds
the kind of access they are used to without endangering the slope
significantly.

Subject: [Tweeters] Pigeon Guillemot Nest Help Needed
I'm hoping someone out there in Tweeter-land can help me find out whether
pigeon guillemots will use man-made nest boxes.
At Dewatto there is a nest colony of pigeon guillemots. This past December
two of five nest holes were destroyed in the storm. They had started
digging four new holes in the past two weeks. This past week someone has
put up plastic sheeting (probably to stabilize the top of the slope, better
late than never I guess) which covered two of the new holes. Over two
existing holes they have mounted two large next boxes (wood duck size).
Will the guillemots use the wooden boxes to access the existing, covered
holes? I would think that due to their flight and landing methods that the
wooden boxes wouldn't be conducive to easy landing or takeoff. Plus the
depth of the box would make it extremely difficult to get into the existing
hole.
What state or federal regulations pertain to guillemot nest sites or
molesting said sites? I'm not certain who mounted the boxes as there was no
one home at the house adjacent to the nest site.
