Hello Gene & all, I was not even tempted to call this bulky, pot-bellied, smudge-eyed bird with a pefectly dark back that didn't greatly contrast with its wingtips a Vega Gull. I gather both Charlie and my pictures are a wee bit overexposed, but I don't believe I've ever seen a Vega Gull in photos or in Alaska that appeared this dark; even Vegas pictured on ice. Though I personally would certainly not try to ascertain the bill shape (and mantle color as mentioned) from such sub-par photos (especially mine), bills are known to be "relatively slender on some females".
Why it's not a Vega X Slaty-back hybrid, well ya got me there;o)
