Hi, in case it helps at all I have pasted a piece of the photo showing the mantle of the Slaty-backed Gull over the top of the Western Gull photo.
As one can see by the overblown white on the head of the inset photo, that picture is overexposed, therefore rendering the dark back shades lighter than it actually appeared at the scene.
