Thanks to those who weighed in on this identification and provided
associated information. Five of you identified it as a ferruginous hawk,
and one as a Swainson's. My initial rather opinion had been probable
ferruginous.

I am enlisting the support of the raptor specialists out there to identify
this bird photographed near Pinnacles National Monument in November of 2007.
I took the photo onto private property from the road, which accounts for the
limited angle of view.
