Today 7 of us enjoyed a good swim (well, it seemed like a swim when we
started) at Nisqually. It was raining pretty hard when we started but eased off
as we returned from McAllister Creek. It started to rain again as we finished
up. For some reason we finished a little earlier than usual.

Highlights included seeing both juveniles and both adult GREAT HORNED OWLS
and seeing a pair of SANDHILL CRANES.

All four owls were inside the boardwalk in the cottonwoods near where last
years next is, south of the boardwalk to the twin barns. The juveniles were
close together in one tree and the adults were in separate trees close by.

We spotted the SANDHILL CRANES in the field behind the riparian area across
from the visitor center. As we finished the walk we go around the riparian
area along the maintenance road and saw the cranes feeding along the tree
line. As we watched they flushed and flew south toward the farm files across I-5.

All told we saw 50 species for the day with the SANDHILL CRANES being the
only new species for the year.
For the year we now have 83 species.

No mammals were seen today.
