The issue with four letter codes is not that we can't look them up, it is
that it takes too much time for all of us that haven't memorized them to
look them up. While it could be argued that the Townsend's Solitaire was
referred to in the subject line, it can still be a bit confusing if the term
is not defined clearly in the body of the message - e.g. "Townsend's
Solitaire - (TOSO)". While I don't object to using codes after clearly
defining them, It just takes a couple of people using them in the posts
before those who love to use them start to use them more and more making it
more and more of a challenge to figure out the posts for both seasoned
birders and newer birders who haven't memorized them. As many of you know,
these codes are designed for using while taking field notes, not reporting
field observations to a larger group.
