You might be able to do it with a digital SLR camera in continuous shoot
mode. If the camera shoots fast enough relative to the speed of the swifts
entering the chimney, a careful look at the photos could possible allow
identification of individual birds. From the number of swifts that
"disappear" into the chimney per frame and the rate per second that the
camera is shooting, you should be able to figure out how many swifts are
going into the chimney per minute. From that number you could estimate the
total for the entire time.
