I have pair of Bewick's Wrens feeding young already here in Bellevue
(Eastgate). Is this early or not? I have never observed such activity in the bird
box this early in the season. I first noticed them nest building way back on
Valentine's Day, February 14 (sweet, eh) immediately after that long stretch
of cold and subfreezing days and nights finally tempered, and they were
courting and singing like mad a week or two before that. I have never observed
any hints of such activity in the bird box this early in the season before.
The usual tenants, and not every year, are Black-capped Chickadees and/or
Bewick's Wrens. This year the wrens must have just been hell bent to get on with
it, and way before I could even get around to tidying up the bird house in
preparation. Whatever was in there left over from the last year or two must
have been to their liking. Anyway, what's the earliest date for nest building
and feeding young in Washington? If such early nesting is not that unusual
or in fact normal, ...well, my apologies for sharing my ignorance.
