You describe the more dramatic part of the Red-tail's famously spectacular
courtship flight. Interestingly, the spiral dive is not unique to Red-tails
and is occasionally practiced by other Buteos and raptors as well. Many
Tweeters are doubtless familiar the Bald Eagle's somewhat slower and more grandiose
versions of the same- often called "sky-dancing" or "Cart-wheeling." My most
impressive experience with the behavior actually came watching Short-toed
Eagles in the Sierra Ronda of Southern Spain. Truly one of the more magnificent
and elegant aspects of raptor culture.
