Day 5- Dawn off the Columbia River mouth. Pomarine/Parasitic Jaeger
chasing kitiwakes at first light. We found a transient pod of Killer
Whales and KW crew launched the zodiac for biopsy and photos for ID.
Headed north after spending a few hours with the whales. Did a zig-zag
north near shore. Day 5 like the preceding days. More Guillemots
southbound. Rhinos spread all around, Gull migration northbound. No
geese, few loons. Tons of Cassin's Auklets at the inshore tip Grays
Canyon again. Day ended deep in the Quinault Canyon. Finally
Fort-tailed Storm Petrels. No Parakeet Auklets but not for lack of
looking! We had 5 Fin Whales (2 babys) moving north with White-sided
Dolphins right at sunset with the Olympics as a backdrop, the snowy
peaks were glowing red in the sunset. A new storm is starting to slam
us now as we ride for the Juan de Fuca to hide.
