Subject: [Tweeters] Last Bufflehead dates?

Dear Rob and Tweeters,
After checking data from eleven years in which I had
kept records of Buffleheads in spring, I found that,
in Skagit and neighboring counties, a few of these
birds can typically be found into the week of May 16
to 23.
Here's a summary of the number of years in which "my
last Bufflehead of spring" appeared in the various
weeks. Years covered are 1993-1998 and 2003-2007.
Late April, one year.
May 1-7, one year.
May 8-15, two years.
May 16-23, five years.
May 24-31, zero years.
June 6, one year (one male at Butler Flats, 6-06-04).
June 28, 2005, one female at Judy Reservoir above
Clear Lake.
I would suspect that, had I visited Stanwood sewage
treatment plant each year, I might have found
Buffleheads later, since that place seems to harbor a
few ducks out of season.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
