Tweets!

I am so sorry to have not posted sooner! I have an ailing elderly mother,
and a job that's hitting me 65-70 hours a week right now - AND a small
business. Sometimes things get lost in my shuffle.

Thank you so much for your kind information about where to take the Hawk's
body, and also your concern and understanding of my feelings when I found
the bird. I have a special place in my heart for these beautiful creatures.
The sadness did not stop with the bird's death, as a dog, or coyote, or some
critter crept into my garage and stole the hawk in what must have been mere
MINUTES after my daughter retrieved it. She brought the bird into the
garage in a hefty bag, and set it atop the garbage can and came into the
house to let me know she'd gotten it for me (I was finishing up cooking our
dinner). Just a few minutes to wash up, and get things taken care of (15-25
minutes), I went into the garage - no bag.

Ok.. this isn't funny, where is the bird...

Finally, in the woods behind the house, we found the littered bag and the
remains of the bird. I was NOT happy.... we found feathers, adn torn up
hefty bag in the woods behind the house. What I find unsettling is how
quickly this happened. Thirty minutes did not pass between teh time of
retrieval/placing the body in the garage, and me going out to place the
creature in the freezer. I have BIG coyote problems, so I wonder WHAT got
the bag... All our neighbor's dogs remain inside the invisible fences (and
are VERY well behaved) - my dog is in the house, we have no wandering cats
(thanks to coyotes)...

I have saved all the information on bird salvaging though... so I am
prepared for the unfortunate time this might happen again. We have three
more of the Cooper's Hawk in the area - they are all young, seem to be first
year birds. They aren't great hunters, but I see them learning.

I have ducks now. Yesterday, one duck. Today two, then after multiple
trips, I find I now have five hanging out in my yard under the bird feeders.
<sigh> I also saw my first goldfinch today (please don't tell me I'm
nuts!). He was distinctly yellow! Life goes on and I am much wiser as a
result.

Thank you all, again.

regards,

nina
