I spent Monday and part of today in Grant Co. In the mornings I stayed
around the Corfu area watching the cranes. They were coming and going pretty
steady from daylight to midmorning. It seemed to me they were a little
closer to the road this morning. The best look I got, though, was on my way
out down Lower Crab Creek just at the bottom of where the road goes down the
rockface. There were several in the posted fields there.
I also got some nice looks at a couple Chukar farther down crab creek. The
big excitement (to me) was when I saw and photographed a shrike. I was sure
it was a Loggerhead but the photo looks just like a Northern.
The rest of the trip I was looking at and for Washington Ground Squirrel.
Best find there was in a study area setup in a burn near Lind Coulee. Some
were tagged but some weren't. Both are fun to watch but the untagged make
for better pictures.
The weather was nice Monday but turned cold and damp today. Hope it gets
better for the festival this coming weekend. The forecast says it will.
