it only took a few months for me to spot all five western washington
woodpecker species in my little greenbelt, and very little time beyond that
for the hairys / downys / flickers to attach themselves to my seed and suet
feeders on a regular basis. however, the red-breasteds and pileateds never
came in, at least while i was watching.

well, the pileated finally made it in this morning. a beautiful fire-engine
red-topped male, dwarfing the suet feeder easily, seemingly enjoying the
homemade cake. i'm honestly not sure how he did his acrobatics to attain
the suet (the block feeder is between two porch railings, mostly on "my"
side, which makes it difficult for the larger birds to attack / find, then
maneuver onto -- by current (but soon-to-change) design), but it was fun
watching this huge guy from less than 8 feet...
