To add to the pattern of recent sightings of Mountain Bluebirds in
western WA, the Early Spring Birds class from the Dungeness River
Audubon Center spotted two female MOBLs in Dungeness on 3/27.

The bluebirds were foraging in a pasture south of Anderson Road, near
Clark Road, using some big rocks in the middle of the pasture for a
launching platform. Mostly they appeared to be flycatching, but one
snatched a sizable green caterpillar off the rocks and stood for
awhile with the mashed caterpillar in its bill. Insects seemed
available, despite the cool weather.

The pasture also had at least three W. Meadowlarks (unfortunately now
a scarce species around the Sequim prairies) and a good number of
newly-arrived Savannah Sparrows, the sound of Sequim-Dungeness
pastures in the spring.

We've also received more reports than usual of W. Bluebirds around
Sequim this spring as well, including some occupying boxes where
they've not been for at least the last 10 years, so maybe it will be
a good bluebird year.
