All this new snow here has really put a dent in the resident goose nesting activities. I have one Canadian Goose who is nesting again some 30 feet up in an old growth snag. Normally, she is well hidden until the eggs hatch and everyone makes that first long drop from the snag. Lots of brush under it to help break their fall. However, the fresh snow from the past two days has made the nesting goose stick out like a dinner bell to the local population of Bald Eagles. I've seen her chased thrice from her nest, down to one of my ponds by young Bald Eagles. With the freezing rain / snow falling I'm sure those eggs have chilled down too much to hatch now.
Can't fault the Eagles, that's what they do. I guess I just feel sorry for the fruitless efforts of the nesting goose who got caught in the snow.
