Hi Tweeters:

With one 16" vertical tube feeder hung in a fir tree adjoining my dining room window I enjoy watching a dozen species of local songbirds. But I have been puzzled as to why squirrels have never been a problem. They climb through the tree, frequently inspect the feeder, but in a year haven't successfully raided it. Judging from horror stories other bird feeders told, I was beginning to think I just had the dumbest squirrels in Seattle. This morning I noticed a large Stellar's Jay around the feeder. A squirrel happened by and the jay gave him what must have been a very hostile lecture, complete with much movement and flapping of wings. The squirrel quickly departed. Can I conclude I don't have dumb squirrels, just protective jays?
