I was on San Juan Island over the weekend and there were lots of eagles
about. Above Lime Kiln Park, a turkey vulture came up from below, soaring on
the thermal. As it got about tree high an eagle came off a perch and flew
directly at the Vulture. As it got close it made vocalizations and the
vulture dropped back down below out of view and the eagle took its place
soaring in circles going higher and higher. Not to be left out of the fun, a
crow came off a tree from above and starting cawwing like a mad thing and
diving on the eagle, which flew off. The crow then rode the thermal for
awhile. Just a minute or two after the crow flew off, the vulture, or
another, came spiraling up the thermal and this one did not get hassled and
it went slowly around and around and gained lots of elevation until it was
just a tiny speck in our bins.

Later at Deadmans Cove on a nice sunny and warm afternoon I got an up close
and friendly look at a breeding plumage Harlequin duck in the nearshore
waters. Rufus Hummers were diving and caChewing in several locations adding
to the afternoon chorus of bird song.
