Yesterday evening around 5:15 I saw a Peregrine Falcon take a Rock Dove right below the Hwy 202/203 bridge over the Snoqualmie River in Fall City. The bird hit hard, grabbed the limp feathered rat with impressive talons and flew off up the river - I'm guessing that this is one of the Sno Falls nesting pair foraging maybe a bit farther than usual due to the truly low numbers of waterfowl on the river and in the fields near the falls. A friend reported that he saw what he thought was a Peregrine take a domestic duck just west of North Bend on Monday. He saw the falcon? kill the duck and pluck the breast before tearing off a big hunk of breast meat and a wing and carrying it off toward the falls. What is the status of the eyeasses at this point? How many and how big? Has anyone else noticed the low numbers of ducks, robins, rock doves and other prey species near the nest? Are the Peregrines literally eating themselves out of house and home? I'm planning on using some new found energy and better mobility to actually go have a look at the nest myself this weekend - hopefully I will be able to see the babes.
