RARE BIRD ALERT for a TUFTED DUCK at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, at least
through May 11th.


Sightings for Monday, May 12th:

At Grant Narrows Nature Trail in Pitt Meadows, a BULLOCK'S ORIOLE and a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were present.

At Cypress Provincial Park in West Vancouver, a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL was heard
at km 11, and 3 SOOTY GROUSE were hooting near the Hollyburn Lodge
trailhead.

In North Vancouver, a CHIPPING SPARROW was present in a garden.


Sightings for Sunday, May 11th:

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, the drake TUFTED DUCK continues.
Nearby was a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE.

The Iona Island sewage ponds in Richmond produced a female WILSON'S
PHALAROPE, 2 CINNAMON TEAL, and 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL.

At Burnaby Mountain Park in Burnaby, a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was present
northwest of the children's play area. Also present here were a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE.

At Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, a NASHVILLE WARBLER was sighted.

In New Westminster, a NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at Tipperary Park.

In Vancouver, a TURKEY VULTURE was seen over Robson Street in the downtown
area.


Sightings for Saturday, May 10th:

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, the TUFTED DUCK was present in the outer
ponds. Around the sanctuary, 1 DUSKY FLYCATCHER and 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER were
seen.

At Iona Island in Richmond, 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES were present on the
southwest pond. Two BLUE-WINGED TEAL and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER there were the
first reports for the year, and an AMERICAN BITTERN was noteworthy.

At the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver, a NASHVILLE WARBLER
was located.


Sightings for Friday, May 9th:

Two SANDHILL CRANES were sighted at the south end of 72nd Street in Delta.


Sightings for Thursday, May 8th:

At the Maplewood Conservation Area, a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was seen.


No sightings reported for Wednesday, May 7th


Sightings for Tuesday, May 6th

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at Lighthouse Park in West
Vancouver.

At Point Roberts, WA, 40 late BLACK TURNSTONES were on the beach at
Lighthouse Marine Park, and 300 PACIFIC LOONS and 300 BRANT were seen
offshore, as were several RHINOCEROS AUKLETS.

Twenty SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were on the tideflats near the base of
the Roberts Bank coal port jetty in Delta.

At the Hazelmere Golf Course on 8th Avenue in Surrey, 42 WHIMBRELS
were seen.


Sightings for Monday, May 5th

A SWAINSON'S HAWK, possibly a first record for Vancouver, was seen
briefly at Derby Reach Park in Langley.

The CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at Eaglecrest Road on Bowen Island was
seen for a second day.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD, the first of the spring, was seen along Ferguson
Road on Sea Island, Richmond. At nearby Iona Island were 9 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 10 late SNOW GEESE, a YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD, 5 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and 28 CASPIAN TERNS.

A pair of EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES are being seen regularly at
4126 River Road, west of Ladner in Delta.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen in Langley's Campbell Valley Park.


Sightings for Sunday, May 4th

The drake TUFTED DUCK was still being seen in the inner ponds at the Reifel
Bird Sanctuary in Delta. Also at Reifel were a SORA and an AMERICAN BITTERN.

>From Iona Island in Richmond came reports of a VESPER SPARROW, a very
rare migrant, and a CHIPPING SPARROW; a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, the
first of the year; a LESSER YELLOWLEGS; 6 PURPLE MARTINS; and 40
CASPIAN TERNS.

A male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD appeared in a yard on Eaglecrest Road on
Bowen Island. Also here were a HUTTON'S VIREO, several CASSIN'S VIREOS,
and many warblers.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE remained at 1961 Berkley Road in North
Vancouver.

Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver produced 4 HERMIT THRUSHES and an
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD.

Another NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at Queen's Park in New Westminster.

Noteworthy birds at Squamish, north of Vancouver, included a YELLOW-BILLED
LOON near the port facilities, and 12 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at the container
port pond.


Sightings for Saturday, May 3rd

The TUFTED DUCK remained at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta. Also there
was one EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE.

Up to 3 CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS were seen near the information kiosk in
Burnaby Mountain Park, Burnaby. Also here were many migrants including
Single NASHVILLE and MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS, single CASSIN'S and
WARBLING VIREOS, 4 HERMIT THRUSHES, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, and a
CHIPPING SPARROW.

A VESPER SPARROW, a very rare migrant, was on the path at the north end of
Boundary Bay Regional Park in Delta, and 7 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were
In the adjacent Beach Grove Lagoon.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW appeared at 1961 Berkley Road in North
Vancouver.

Four late RED-THROATED LOONS and a HORNED LARK were seen along the
Iona I. south jetty in Richmond. At Iona itself were 9 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS and a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, and on adjacent Sea
Island were 2 PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 9 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE,
And 10 WILSON'S SNIPE.

Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver provided gobs of migrants including a
CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, a WILSON'S SNIPE, 20 VARIED THRUSHES,
and dozens of warblers and sparrows.

At Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver were the first SWAINSON'S
THRUSH of the year, 6 HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHERS, and 6 PURPLE MARTINS.

A Nature Vancouver field trip to Everett Crowley Park in Vancouver produced
several birds of interest including the year's first OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER,
2 MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS, and 6 HERMIT THRUSHES.


Sightings for Friday, May 2nd

At Blackie Spit in Surrey were a BLACK OYSTERCATCHER, a WHIMBREL, and 2
PURPLE MARTINS.

Deer Lake Park in Burnaby yielded a BARRED OWL, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE,
8 late RING-NECKED DUCKS, and 5 PURPLE MARTINS.

In North Vancouver, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRE were at 1961 Berkley Road.


Sightings for Thursday, May 1st

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW appeared at 1961 Berkley Road in North
Vancouver, and a HARRIS'S SPARROW continued in the Norgate Park
area of North Vancouver.

A CHIPPING SPARROW and a NASHVILLE WARBLER were seen in the
2600 block of East 5th Avenue in Vancouver.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, one of many this spring, was seen at Cecil Green
Park near the University of BC in Vancouver.
