Hi everyone,

This morning around 8:30 I observed a female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD in the Anacortes Community Forest Lands at Morrison Meadow, at the top of the ridge on trail #103 just east of Little Cranberry Lake. Closest street access is the 29th Street or 28th Street trail entrance.

I watched her feeding from six to eight feet away (hooray for close-focusing binos!). She fed long and thoroughly on the flowering paintbrush around an ocean-spray at trailside. After about five minutes of feeding she flew up to perch in the huge serviceberry in the meadow, then away. Diagnostics: NO rufous in the tail (dark with white tips), wingtips extending beyond the tail when perched, "dotted line" pattern on her throat, relatively short bill.

On my way home, a Wilson's Warbler was singing his heart out from a high perch. Other treats: Olive-sided Flycatcher and P-S Flycatcher (also seen) calling, a California Quail running across a rooftop, and two Canada Geese flew over, honking.
