Hello, tweets.

Breeding season is well under way, and I've had evidence of it in our
yard.

This morning three just-fledged juvenile Red-breasted Nuthatches
appeared at the fountain. They were the epitome of cuteness, as they
tried to figure out what they were supposed to be doing there. I
think finally all of them took a bath and had a drink (from the same
water, ewww!) after sitting around for a while twitching their bodies
back and forth.

On Friday (5/16), a fresh juvenile Band-tailed Pigeon visited the
feeder with a couple of adults. The adults sat in the feeder and
gorged themselves as usual, and the youngster sat on top and
occasionally looked down, but it never figured out what to do. Netta
tells me it came again on Saturday by itself, but again it just sat
on the roof of the feeder for a while before flying away. There's a
lot of learning to do.

Meanwhile a Black-capped Chickadee is making good use of one of our
feeders. It's hanging by a cord that is very fibrous, and the
chickadee lands on it and pulls fibers off until it has a beakful,
then flies away in the direction of its nest. I keep wonder if I'll
find the feeder on the ground one of these days.
