hi tweeters- we were in leavenworth for rock-climbing + some birding - on
may 19th, we were up in icicle canyon climbing + heard + saw 2 singing
NASHVILLE WARBLERS -they were singing for several hours-later i saw a
LAZULI BUNTING male calling -after a while the warbler + bunting were
calling for the same tree almost side by side repeatly for cver an
hour!--there were also TURKEY VULTURES, a nesting AM.ROBIN + STELLER'S
JAYS-+EVENING GROSBEAKS--later we went to the fish hatchery, where we saw
CANADA GEESE,MALLARDS,COMMON MERGANSERS,RUFOUS HUMMING BIRDS,CHIPPING
SPARROWS,W.WOOD PEWEE,HAIRY WOODPECKER,N.FLICKER YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS,+
A LARGE FLOCK of RED CROSSBILLS w/ WHITE -BREASTED + RED -BREASTED
NUTHATCH,BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE + A MERICAN DIPPER -building a nest under
the weir control bridge at the far end of the walkway(we saw dippers
there w/ nest last year as well--- on. the other side of the
hatchery-where the icicle ski trail is, next to the sleeping lady resort,
we saw CALIFORNIA QUAIL, BULLOCK'S ORIOLE, BLACK -HEADED GROSBEAKS, AM.
GOLDFINCH,SPOTTED SANDPIPERS,OSPREY,N.ROUGH-LEGGED SWALLOWS, VIOLET
-GREEN + BARN SWALLOWS + BLACK SWIFTS-as well, , we saw a female
WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER-comment: i have seen these on many occasions in
this area while x-c skiing the icicle ski trail .--on may 20, it was
raining in icicle canyon so we went up mountain home road to the little
railroad track- the owner said ok to walk along where we saw a downy
KESTREL, RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER,YELOW,YELLOW-RUMPED +TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS,HOUSE WREN,AM.ROBINS,WESTERN TANAGERS.we drove back to the ''end
of county line sign'' + started looking around -there were numerous
WESTERN TANGERS ,like as many as 5 in a group-most were males + sitting
very low to the ground-also there was a WHITE-BREASTED + RED- BREASTED
NUTHATCH - a few MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES.we drove a little further to the
road up to mountain ridge trail + drove up that road. . there again there
were seemingly WESTERN TANAGERS everywhere!--we went up to the top -about
1 mile-where you can see over to blewett pass hwy-there we saw a small
flock of RED CROSSBILLS, PYGMY NUTHATCH,SPOTTED TOWHEE and finally , a
male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD-also YELLOW -RUMPED + YELLOW WARBLERS +
DARK-EYED JUNCOS +WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS-RE:WHITE -HEADED WOODPECKER-2
friends of mine who live in leavenworth- 1 near MOUNTAIN HOME RD. + 1 on
EAGLE CREEK RD. have the WHITE -HEADE W/PS regularly at their feeders -
all of these wonderful birds make a trip to leavenworth (1 tank of gas) a
