I couldn't understand why pricing of black oil sunflower seeds had
*doubled*($16.99 to now 32.99 for a 40# bag) so I had to check it out.
According to
one website www.fehls.com

"There are two factors that I have seen to increase the demand for
sunflower seed. First, Lays potato chips no longer uses vegetable seed oil
to bake their chips, they only uses sunflower seed oil. Second, major
cities throughout the U.S. are only allowing food to be fried in sunflower
seed oil.
As far as the decreased production, at this point, farmers are able to plant
different crops that produce more money per acre. For instance, corn
production has been increased due to the auto industries demand for ethanol
based fuel."
