MessageRachel,

Don't know how much you're willing or able to spend, but check out www.birdjam.com.
This is the item used by birdguide Wezil Walraven with High Lonesome Birdtours on LCBAS's SE Arizona August birding trip. I've promised myself one of these for Christmas even if I have to stick up a service station for the money. lol You can order it preloaded with all the bird songs of both East and West North America (and you can add the bird songs of Costa Rica and Mexico) plus photographs and with the capasity to find any species in 15 seconds. Also available is a protective case with built-in external speakers. This thing is the greatest innovation since sliced bread.

Subject: [Tweeters] RFI: iPods for birdsong

My cassette player is ridiculously obsolete, and I think it's about time I got an iPod to download birdsong for use in the field. So, I would like to ask all of you Tweeters what iPod models are working for you, and what you recommend. I don't plan to use the iPod for anything but birdsong. My main questions are:

1) How much memory is enough for downloading multiple birdsong CDs for North America and elsewhere?

2) What displays and controls are easy to see and use under field conditions (bright sun, gloved fingers, etc.)?

3) What add-on speakers offer the best combination of good sound quality, volume, and small size?

4) Are there any other things I should consider?

I would appreciate any opinions. Please reply off-list, and if any of you are interested in the responses I get, let me know and I'll send them along.
