my name's caren, gene :) the "00" in front was simply a way of communicating to folks that i wore (and continue to wear) glasses. back in the early days of computers, IBM monitors used to have little dots in the middle of the zero / naught, and so two zeroes side-by-side looked like two eyes with glasses.

it's been 30 years, and i still sign with it. go figure. :)

anyway, the website has been updated with the photo: http://realistatlarge.blogspot.com/2008/11/rarity-just-passing-through.html ... you can go to the homepage of the website (see URL below) and (for the next few hours, anyway) this will probably be the top entry (among dozens). or, you can click on this and be taken directly to it... enjoy!

Dear 00 caren (sorry, but I don?t know your name),

Your sighting was several miles west of Joyce?s, in the Sammamish Slough area south of Woodinville rather than in the Snoqualmie Valley southwest of Duvall. So, likely a different bird. Thanks for the details for the record. Rough-legged Hawks are decidedly rare in King County.

Ollie has taken 2 very good photos of the current hawk. He mentioned that the hawk was quite nervous and not pleased to have its picture taken.

almost exactly four years ago (2004 november 21), early afternoon, just west of the bridge over the river on 124th... i distinctly remember the day as overcast, and s/he wouldn't let me come any closer than about 40 metres or so. it was active from 124th and willows road most of the way east towards the redmond-woodinville road...

i don't remember nearly as much about how long s/he was in the area, but it seems like it was about one week...

i'll try to remember to post the photograph on my website tonight (in my copious free time) :)

It is likely the same bird that Joyce found there last winter. When did you photograph a rough-leg there before? Could be we have a bird of fixed habits.

Hi Tweets:

The Rough-legged Hawk continues to be seen in the Samammish Valley. If it isn't perched on the waterwheel, it's on one of the power poles that borders the sod farm on NE 124th St. that runs between Totem Lake and the Redmond-Woodinville Rd.
