Yesterday afternoon about 3:00 PM I visited Thompson Lake at Steamboat
Rock State Park. Along with the usual swarms of bufflehead, ruddy
ducks, and American coots there were two big, black low riding ducks
with white wing patches, white eyeshadow, and orangish bills. Sure
enough, not one but two WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. They hung around for at
least an hour but eventually spooked and headed toward Banks Lake.

If you don't know the area, take Highway 155 to the Steamboat Rock
State Park entrance. Follow the entry road to the park. Thompson Lake
is a pothole tucked don in a hole on the left just before you get to
the entry station. Be careful, hunting is allowed around the lake.
