Subject: [Tweeters] Notes from Roy - Northern Saw-whet Owl

Tweeters,

While outside painting the inside of my shed, I heard a bunch of small birds
(many juncos, several RB nuthatches, and a very vociferous Bewick's Wren)
going "nuts" in a patch of noble firs not far from the shed entrance just a
few minutes ago. I dropped the paintbrush and walked into the plantation,
and found an adult Northern Saw-whet Owl perched inside a bunch of branches
on a "topped" noble fir (lots of branching on top of a tree about 12 feet
high). (My photos are good enough for me, but not for showing anyone else,
except to my wife!)

This is a first time I've actually seen this species - although I've heard
it several times in CA. Another first for the property - and very near the
spot where I found a Northern Pygmy Owl a few months ago.

May all your birds be identified,

Denis DeSilvis
