Yesterday (Nov. 13), Barry Woodruff and I spent some time on
Beacon Rock in Skamania County attempting to get a response from the
reported Canyon Wren. We played recorded calls all the way to the top and
back down again without any response from a bird. It was quite windy all
day which may have reduced the chance of us hearing or being heard by the
wren. Two ladies who were walking the trail heard us playing the tape and
said "Oh, a Canyon Wren, we've heard them here before".
From Beacon Rock we went up to Bonneville Dam where we spotted a
good sized flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS floating in the river a quarter
mile below the dam. When we looked up river towards the dam I was
surprised at how many of these dainty gulls were just below the dam, we
estimated that there were in excess of 300 in the total swarm of birds.
We looked through the birds hoping to find either a kittiwake or the one
day wonder Ross' Gull that had been seen earlier at Coulee Dam. The only
unusual gull we did see was an adult WESTERN GULL perched on the concrete
wall below the dam.
Continuing upriver to Stevenson we checked Rock Creek Cove where
there were 9 juvenile GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.
In the cove at the Dog Mountain trailhead parking lot we found
six REDHEAD in with a small flock of AMERICAN WIGEON.
Our final attempt to get a Canyon Wren to respond was when we
checked Locke Lake, just east of Bingen in Klickitat County. This is a
known locale for these wrens but we were unable to elicit a response here
but Barry did pick out a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE among the Black-cappeds in
the oak trees along the lake shore.
