Hey Tweets, I birded Douglas County solo this past weekend working to
get my county list there over 100 (which I did).

Saturday - I started at East Wenatchee, drove the streets of Rock
Island, went up Batterman Road (to scope the pond), hit the Rock Island
golf course, then took Palisades Road up Moses Coulee, past Rimrock,
through the Nature Conservancy to US 2, then on to south Jameson Lake,
back tracked west to Withrow, east to Mansfield, south to St. Andrew,
back through Mansfield (the cemetery was dead) and straight to Pateros
in the dark. Highlights:

Merlin - From SR 28 just before leaving E. Wenatchee - pulled over and
watched it "hunt" from the top of a utility pole before zipping off.
Western Grebe - In the river just west of Rock Island.
Hooded and Common Merganser, Ring necked Duck, both Scaup, Mallard - on
the pond at Batterman.
Chukar - On Palisades Road about 2 miles east of the highway.
Golden Eagle, Rough Legged Hawk (3), Northern Shrike (2) - On Palisades
Road up the coulee, along with Red tailed Hawk, Kestrel, Prairie Falcon
(at the top).
Canyon Wren - Across from the Nature Conservancy facility on Coulee
Meadows Road.
Gray Crowned Rosy Finch - A flock of 8-10 circling the cliffs/calling -
about 2 miles from the resort (north from where Michael Hobbs saw them)
on Jameson Lake Road.
Rock Wren - Approximate same location, from a cement retaining wall
close to the cliffs.
Common Goldeneye, Coot, Green winged Teal, Wigeon, Ruddy Duck - On
Jameson Lake.
Long eared Owl - Heritage Road east of Mansfield, at least 4 in the thin
copse. (Someone shot 6 members of the colony last year.)

Sunday - Went up Central Ferry at daybreak, streaked across the top and
Armour Road, down to the Bridgeport Sewer Pond road (the Rock Wren there
wasn't home), drove out on Chief Joseph Island (never could find the
boat launch and Saw-whet nest box...), Bridgeport Bar (way too many
hunters!), scanned Pateros Lake from the three turn outs on SR 173, up
to Chief Joseph Dam (no water in Foster Creek) but lots of activity at
the Murphy Road burn pile/fishing area, then Bridgeport Hill, southeast
to Withrow, west on US 2 to Douglas, then Waterville (Pioneer Park and
Cemetery), down the canyon on US 2 to Orondo, and into East Wenatchee to
end the county listing marathon. Highlights:

Northern Pygmy Owl - Came in (along with Mountain Chickadee, Red
Crossbill, Red breasted Nuthatch, Clark's Nutcracker, Steller's Jay)
SILENTLY to the tape on Central Ferry Road just where the pines begin.
Not a single toot from the owl.
Eared, Red necked and Horned Grebes among the thousands of waterfowl -
On Lake Pateros, from the SR 173 pull out furthest east.
Thousands of waterfowl, including Bufflehead, Redhead, Wigeon, Coot,
Mallard, Common Goldeneye, who knows what else - On Lake Pateros.
Winter Wren - From the same pull out (closest to Bridgeport) across the
road in the firs, then flew (to the NOPO tape) across the road to brush
- "tup tup, tup tup."
Anna's Hummingbird - Well, I don't know what else this time of year
would be green and hovering at a feeder but since it was only an instant
and I couldn't tell if male or female I'm not counting it...but the
feeder bears checking if anyone is in Withrow. At the corner of First &
Columbia, shiny new feeder with RED sugar water.
Pine Siskin - On a niger feeder (with Goldfinch) at the first house off
US 2 on Elevator Road in the town of Douglas.
Both Kinglets (finally) with the extra special bonus Code 4 Brown
Creeper at the Waterville Cemetery, at the top near the Wheat Wives
Mausoleum.
Townsend's Solitaire (2) - Second westbound pull out on US 2 coming down
the canyon from Waterville.

I saw very few gulls anywhere, Common Loons were more frequent, small
flocks of mixed Cackling and Canada geese but no White Fronts and no
swans. Hectic but great weekend (with special thanks to county list
master Meredith Spencer for many suggestions!).
