Thanks to Kahn for passing along this thread, but the original premise that 1/3 to over 1/2 of ALL "rare" birds are actually detected seems absolutely absurd to me.
Sibley sensibly reigned in things to as low as 3%, which seems sooo much more realistic, but am I the only one who thinks that LESS THAN 1% is a more sensible number (that is the total % of rare birds occurring in the country that are actually detected)?
I have had multiple Code 4 and 5 birds at my feeder... I see feeders all over town locally... why would I be so special?
What about the huge expanses of unlived in/unbirded areas across the continent; do we really detect 3 out of 100?
