Sibley's stats might be closer to truth on the East coast where there are probably larger numbers of birdwatchers per square mile and few wilderness areas that are very hard to get to.

The other consideration is how often any of us would take a second look at something that looks almost identical to a 'trash' species. So, even if we see something rare, we might not 'see' it.
