I spent several hours birding in Discovery Park beginning around 10 am on Saturday. It was pretty slow in terms of diversity, though there were good concentrations of common species. However, quite a sizable flock of Golden-crowns and Juncos feeding on the cement behind the abandoned PX and Maintenance buildings (East of the Naval Housing and south of the Purple martin gourds) contained a bright adult White-throated sparrow that stood out like a thumb. About an hour of viewing from West Point in great light between 12:30 and 1:30 pm revealed good numbers of murrelets heading south--perhaps 30-40 in this short time. Most were too far out to identify but a group of 6 Ancient murrelets landed and immediately dove about 200 meters off the point, giving nice views for about 10 seconds once they returned to the surface and before taking off. A small flock of Marbled murrelets was identifiable as it flew past close in.
