I was in Port Townsend this afternoon and went to Fort Warden and North
Beach, birding.
I have a question about Bonaparte gulls. Do they hover and dive for fish
like terns do? I was at the Marine science center pier about 2 pm and
watched a pair of what I think were Bonaparte gulls , doing that. Was so
neat watching them dive and bounce right back on top of the water.
At North Beach, at 3:00 pm, a big flock of red necked mergazers flew in,
hit the water and began a feeding frenzy! It lasted 15 to 20 minutes. I
kept recounting the birds. there were over 50! I did not know that
mergazers every congregated it that large of a flock! Of course, my camera
was home!!
