My most recent toad was near Keys Road, about a mile above where the Satsop
River joins the Chehalis River. It was a juvenile, metamorphosed just this
past summer. Toads breed in quiet waters of some of the larger rivers in
western Washington, most notably, on the Olympic Peninsula. The Satsop is
one such river. Perhaps the toad I saw was far from its parents. It seems
likely that the current in these rivers might wash many a toad tadpole many
miles from where the eggs were laid.

And, so I say, "Great river, wash me a toad."
