To all of those interested in my nature programs.

The following are my nature programs offered through Camp Long and the
Seattle Parks department through December, as well as a few activities
offered by others at Camp Long. Apologies for the last minute notice on
tonight's beach walk, but better late than never. When I checked this
morning there were still 9 spaces for tonight's 10:30 p.m. - midnight beach
walk. I can't remember how low the tide is, but I believe it is among the
lowest in the year.

Please pre-register by calling (Camp Long) 206 684-7434

the stories of our owls and practice our own hooting. Please register by

Salamander Love Night

We look for the Northwestern Salamanders - Ambystoma gracile and Long-toed
Salamanders - Ambystoma longicaudata that come to Camp Long's pond at about
Valentines night each year to find a mate and court. After a sexy dance
males will offer a spermatheca and hope that the enraptured females will
pick it up with their cloacas to fertilize the eggs that she will then wrap
around a stem of an aquatic plant or to a stick underwater. We have never
seen the courtship or egg laying, but are almost guaranteed to see adult
salamanders in the pond that gather for the big annual event.

also Saturday 03-14-09 1:30pm - 3:00pm - (daytime) Salamander Search

This daytime program will have a greater focus on the forest salamanders -
the lungless (Plethodon) Ensatina and Red-backed Salamanders, as well as all
of the other organisms that live under the logs and rocks, from beetles and
centipedes to slugs, worms and fungi.

A list of all upcoming nature related events offered by the Seattle Parks
Dept is on this website below, but confusingly they have arbitrarilly put
them into categories of "plants", "animals", "nature walks" and "nature
walks - pre-school / Tots" My programs are typically focused both on the
plants and animals, are nature walks and all ages are typically welcome. I
do occasionally offer the specifiallly tot oriented programs. Maybe I
should offer some programs that are more specifically adult oriented, but I
find I can make programs reasonably interesting for both adults and kids at
the same time.
