In my yard over the past two weeks I have caught a few naked-eye glimpses of a chickadee that seemed to have too much white on its head, but couldn't find it amongst the Black-capped & Chestnut-backed when I tried, with binoculars. I may have found it today. Upon sighting it, I called my friend Kevin and asked him if there was a chickadee species with a narrow black stripe through the eye and a white stripe above that. A Mountain Chickadee, he said, and it did indeed look just like the Sibley illustration. This may explain the chickadee with the odd call that I have heard lately as well.

Also in the yard today, 10+ Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Yellow Warbler, 1 Hummingbird and the first 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglets of the season. Yesterday there were 10 Cedar Waxwings and an Orange-crowned Warbler in with the Yellow-rumps and Yellow.
