We had a few birds of interest this weekend at Tiny's Land in n. Lake Stevens. First, late for us was an overhead BARN SWALLOW Saturday, Oct. 11; they of course occur much later down in the sea-level lowlands but we're close to the foothills here. Less expected were five W. BLUEBIRDS that flew over the place early morning; this was just the second time in 13 years here, and the other birds were found in late March. Also yesterday morn the N. PYGMY-OWL located two weeks ago was heard again from the same stand of tall hemlocks.

We found ourselves at Bowman Bay near Deception Pass last night (extreme s.w. Skagit Co), and while it was a family trip, I was surprised to find two CLARK'S GREBES feeding out toward Rosario Rock as viewed through the scope; one bird was molting to basic and the other was already there. Also of note, in the brush along the small estuarine area south of the parking lot, I had a dark FOX SPARROW with contrasting rusty tail, olive-gray face and dark rusty breast spots; could not place subsp. but figured on one of the northern races of Sooty, perhaps altivagans.
