While forcing my aging body to try and jog around Green Lake
yesterday, I noticed two interspecific bird behaviors that I hadn't
seen before. First, a female Mallard was feeding on the lawn near
the trail, when a Crow suddenly plunged down and landed on the
Mallard's back, causing the Mallard to squawk and scramble away. I
didn't notice the Crow getting away with any food. Second, there
were about a dozen American Coots swimming near the shore, when a
Pigeon flew in among them and hovered close to several, intimidating
the Coots into splashing away. Was it hoping for a dropped bite of
food? Nature is endlessly fascinating.
