This morning (10-19-08) 6-Noon, Tom Mansfield and I birded around Woodland, then drove up to almost Red Rock Pass (last part the road was washed out) and stopped at Merrill Lake and Speelyai Fish Hatchery. Good birds included:
Snow Geese-small flock along southern part of Dike Rd., Woodland
Thayer's Gull adult at Horseshoe Lake Park, Woodland
Eurasian Collared-Doves were in 3 different places around Woodland
3 Barn Owls-Woodland Bottoms
2 Great Horned Owls-Dike Rd. southern end
2 Northern Pygmy-Owls east of Kalama Horse Camp
1 White-breasted Nuthatch-Woodland (Pekin Rd.)
3-4 Dippers at the Speelyai Fish Hatchery
1 White-throated Sparrow-Dike Rd.

Merrill Lake was quiet with a calling Pileated Woodpecker and an adult Bald Eagle. The Red Rock Pass Red Crossbills are not the typical type 3 Red Crossbills. The Kip Kip...call notes are not as loud and sharp as the type 3 are.
