A birding friend here in Olympia has said that he's seen a couple of Broad-winged Hawks (at least, hawks that are most likely to be Broad-wings) in this area over the last several years. I looked up the status of the species in Hal Opperman's Birder's Guide to Washington, which cites a few observations in western Washington in the fall. It also makes the intriguing suggestion that there might be a "largely undetected southward migration through Western Washington." Does anyone know of observations of Broad-wings that might support that speculation?

Cheers,
Burt
