Having some free time while the wife was in meetings in Wenatchee, I
took a trip up Badger Mountain--pretty quiet though a good number of
Mountain Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatch--then across the
Waterville Plateau to the Douglas Creek Natural Area. En route, the best
find of the day was a Rough-legged Hawk standing in one of the un-plowed
sections along 4 Rd SW between J and H roads. Unfortunately, it took
flight when i stopped for a photo.
Douglas Creek was also pretty quiet, but the fall colors were
spectacular. Among the few sightings was a Stellers's Jay imitating the
call of a Red-tailed Hawk. This should be a pretty productive spot in
the springtime with good riparian habitat for several miles. But, the
creek has overflown the trail in several places and may require boots or
other water-tolerable foot gear. Access from the south is not possible
as a beaver pond has grown to cover the road with over 2 feet of water,
probably more early in the season.
