For about 3 years previous to this, there was one Steller's Jay who
sat in my bushes and trees, feigning redtailedness. There is an
occasional redtail in the neighborhood or flying over it. Never saw
whether or not the jay's calls quieted down the small birds in the
yard. Unfortunately, that jay seems to have moved on after last
summer's (2007) major wildlife habitat shake-up in the neighborhood -
6-7 large conifers in a one-block area, were downed, mostly for views
and development. The jays and others, lost a large chunk of their
usual territory - I had much jay chaos in my yard, as they jockeyed
for spots in and on the remaining conifers. The result has been a
changeover and reduction of jays living in and around my property
this year and the redtail mimic is one of the missing "usuals". This
year I've only heard them mimicking crows and starlings...
