Subject: [Tweeters] White-breasted Nuthatch(?) at Hoh Rain Forest

Hello Tweeters,

While visiting the Hoh Rain Forest about a week ago, my wife and I, as well
as others, heard the song (several notes on the same pitch, a bit like a
laugh) of what we thought was a White-breasted Nuthatch, right at the
visitor center. We are both very familier with this species as it nests
around our yard in Wilson, NY. We heard the call several times but were
unable to locate the bird. However, someone with a book (was it Birds of
Washington?) showed us a range map that indicated that White-breasted
Nuthatch did not make it west into the Olympic Mountains.

Can anyone tell us the status of White-breasted Nuthatch in this part of
Washington? Is there something else that sounds similar which we are
overlooking? We would greatly appreciate any insight that is offered.

Good birding, everyone!
Willie
