Hi All,



My wife and I took a hike around Discovery Park this morning. I think we
arrived before most of the park's feathered residents were awake. We
started at the south parking lot and were greeted with nothing but silence
all the way to the South Meadow. At the south meadow, a few goldfinches
flew over, as well as a couple noisy Anna's Hummingbirds, but little else
was stirring. We continued on down through the forest encounter a Song
Sparrow or two and then a noise flock of Bushtits, Black-capped Chickadees
and an Orange-crowned Warbler by the sewage treatment plant. In the pond
near the sound a noisy American Wigeon was swimming among several quiet
Mallards. As we continued uphill to the top of the North Beach Trail, we
discovered a tent in the meadow at the top, but no birds. Continuing on we
eventually came to a large patch of blackberry brambles on the edge of the
forest that was teeming with birds. Chickadees, Orange-crowned Warblers,
robins, Cedar Waxwings, Anna's Hummingbirds, Song Sparrows, towhees and more
were all active in this one little patch. The highlight though was watching
a Western Wood-Pewee chase and catch a small butterfly in the air. He then
landed, and after thrashing the butter fly a bit he swallowed it whole. I
